Netflix Enters the Cloud Gaming Market
Last updated on 15. August 2023
When we talk about cloud gaming services like Xbox Cloud, we often use the word “netflix like” to describe how it works: you have a predetermined list of games in your app, you select a title and start playing – just like when binging our favorite series on Netflix. Well, maybe we’ll soon play our cloud games on Netflix, too, as after the warm reception of their mobile gaming debut in 2021, it seems that Netflix is keen on exploring the expansive world of cloud gaming.
Cloud gaming beta announced
On monday, the streaming giant announced that a selective beta test for their upcoming cloud gaming offering is on the horizon, specifically for those in Canada and the UK. This trial, initially planned for TVs, will soon extend its reach to PCs and Macs through compatible browsers. Among the first games slated for this test are Oxenfree from Night School Studio and the playful Molehewโs Mining Adventure.
Phones as controllers
Netflix also announced an interesting twist on the traditional gaming input devices: While playing on a TV, users will be using their mobile phone as a controller. With this, couch co-op with friends could become more accessible than ever. After all, every guest will bring their own controller without even noticing! Once the service launches on PC and Mac, you can play with a keyboard and mouse.
Availability
For now, games on TV will be available on the following devices:
- Amazon Fire TV Streaming Media Players
- Chromecast with Google TV
- LG TVs
- Nvidia Shield TV
- Roku devices and TVs
- Samsung Smart TVs
- Walmart ONN
Conclusion
Netflix is in a unique position to enter the cloud gaming market over the next years. Not only do they already have one of the most robust streaming infrastructures on the planet, they also have a huge user base and a strong financial backing to expand quickly. As more competition is always good for the customer, this is great news for every cloud gaming enthusiast. And while it will probably take a couple of months, we will, of course, add Netflix to our cloud gaming database once the service becomes public.
